What is CHSP?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an Australian Government-funded program designed to help older people stay living safely and independently at home.
It provides entry-level support for people who need a little extra help with day-to-day tasks, as well as respite services to support carers.
Why might someone need CHSP?
As we age, everyday tasks can become more difficult. CHSP is designed for people who:
- Want to remain living at home rather than move into residential care
- Need help with basic tasks like cleaning, transport, or personal care
- Are starting to experience reduced mobility, health, or independence
- Have a carer who may need occasional support or a break
CHSP focuses on supporting independence, not replacing it — helping people continue doing what they can, safely and confidently.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible if you are:
- 65 years or older (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)
- Living at home and needing assistance with daily activities
You may also be eligible if you are younger and experiencing premature ageing, particularly if you are:
- On a low income
- At risk of homelessness
- Living in unsafe or challenging home conditions
What services can you receive?
CHSP offers a range of government-subsidised services, depending on your needs. These may be short-term, occasional, or ongoing.
Common services include:
- Domestic assistance (cleaning, laundry, shopping)
- Transport (appointments, shopping, social outings)
- Meals and nutrition support
- Personal care (showering, dressing)
- Home maintenance and modifications
- Social support and group activities
- Nursing and allied health services
You can receive multiple services at the same time, often from different providers.
How much does it cost?
CHSP is government subsidised, meaning:
- You will only pay a small contribution if you can afford it
- Fees vary depending on the provider
- Costs are discussed and agreed before services begin
- No one is denied services if they cannot afford to pay
