Client Background
Roy is a gentle older man who had been living alone in extremely poor conditions, with his home environment falling into severe squalor.
Over time, this began to significantly impact his health. He was experiencing skin and eye irritation, appeared unable to maintain personal hygiene, and his clothing and living space were heavily soiled. There were also growing concerns about his cognitive capacity, alongside episodes of urinary and bowel incontinence.
When Elderfolks became involved, Roy was living in a way that placed his health, safety, and dignity at serious risk.
The Challenge
Roy was completely isolated.
He had no contact with family or friends and was not connected to any formal supports—no GP, no health services, and no one regularly checking in on his wellbeing. Without urgent intervention, his physical and cognitive health continued to decline.
It was imperative that Roy receive medical attention as soon as possible. Without assessment and treatment, his condition was likely to worsen, further impacting his safety, independence, and overall wellbeing.
Our Approach
The Elderfolks team took a gentle, person-centred approach, working alongside Roy to rebuild the foundations of his wellbeing.
A key priority was supporting Roy to engage with a GP. We worked closely with him to arrange and attend medical appointments, ensuring he could receive a thorough health assessment and begin necessary treatment.
At the same time, we coordinated a full clean of his home. Importantly, Roy was included throughout the process—helping ensure the experience felt collaborative rather than overwhelming, and that he remained in control of his environment.
We also arranged aged care supports to provide ongoing assistance with daily tasks, home maintenance, and connection to essential services.
The Outcome
Roy was able to access the medical care he urgently needed, including treatment for his skin and eye conditions.
His home was restored to a safe, clean, and liveable environment—creating a space where he could feel more comfortable and secure.
He was approved for a Level 2 Home Care Package, giving him access to coordinated support including case management, cleaning assistance, and meal services. These supports are now helping Roy maintain his health, independence, and day-to-day wellbeing.
Why It Matters
Roy’s story highlights how isolation can quietly lead to unsafe and deteriorating living conditions.
Without support, it can be difficult for people to recognise when they need help—or to know how to access it. In Roy’s case, timely medical intervention was critical, and when combined with ongoing support, it created meaningful and lasting change.
At Elderfolks, we believe everyone deserves to live with dignity, safety, and connection. With the right care in place, Roy now has the stability and support he needs to move forward.
